The seventh of spectacular series 'The Renaissance Madonna' which captures the most beautiful artworks of the Renaissance period. The program honors the most renowned painters and sculptors in the history of art that have turned their skills toward the creation of Madonna images. This incredible proof coin celebrates Adoration of the Child by the Italian Renaissance artist Correggio.
The work was donated by Francesco I Gonzaga, duke of Mantua, to Cosimo II de' Medici of Tuscany in 1617. The Medici exhibited it in the Uffizi Tribune, where it remained until 1634. The original commission of the painting is however unknown, although some identify it with that mentioned by late Renaissance art biographer Giorgio Vasari and which had been brought to Reggio Emilia from Genoa by Luca Pallavicino. The dating of the work is based on stylistic elements: the 1524-1526 dates derives from similarities with the Deposition and the Martyrdom of Four Saints. Copies of the painting were executed by Johan Zoffany and Giovan Battista Stefaneschi.
The centre of the coins reverse composition features a full colored copy of the world famous painting of the Renaissance period: the Adoration of the Child painted by the Italian Renaissance artist Antonio da Correggio. A Russian design studio is responsible for all designs, combining historical paintings with modern numismatic technology. The image is surrounded by finely engraved ornaments and statues. At the bottom, the name of the artist is featured.
The obverse of each coin features the coat of arms of Andorra, the year of issue "2013" and the denomination of the coin. The lower part of the obverse features multiple ornaments and references to paintings, such as brushes and paint scales.
